Jean is a local to DeRuyter and has been working with dogs for over 25 years. After graduating from DeRuyter High School she attended Morrisville College for Fish and Wildlife Conservation. While in school she spent two years working with the elephants at Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. In 1990 she started her career in dog grooming and boarding.

After two decades and raising two children it was time to open her own shop in the old school house she calls home. May of 2012 School House Dog Grooming opened for business and we haven't looked back since. When not grooming dogs Jean enjoys running, camping and taking care of her three dogs, Danica and Henry the Newfoundlands and Sammie the Boston Terrier.
Services
Our basic grooming includes a brush out, sanitary trim, bath with customized shampoo, ear cleaning and plucking (if needed), nail trim and pad trim.
Certain dog breeds have coats that are either double coated or very long, this means that they can form matts very easily and sometimes take longer to brush out.
We like to take the time to do this with the least amount of stress and pain possible.
When the hair becomes extremely tangled it can sometimes be impossible to brush out without causing great pain to the dog.
Here at School House Dog Grooming we are very proud of our boarding facilities.
They are a very unique set up compared to your traditional concrete floors and chain link fence of bigger companies.
When you board with us your dog will be very comfortable.
This is thanks to the fact that we live in an old school house and our upstairs is split into two halves, one half we live on, the other is the boarding facility and the large basement is where we groom dogs!
Boarding with us your dog will stay in its own private room with rubber floors, a four post dog bed and will go outside into a large fenced in yard instead of a small run.
At the recommendation of multiple veterinarians we do not express anal glands.
It is something that should be done by a vet only and only if there is a medical problem.
If done improperly it can lead to infection and all sorts of problems so we recommend if your dog is having problems to call your regular vet.
An average appointment for grooming can take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours.
If a dog has long or very dense hair it can take a longer time to brush them out without harming or stressing them the appointment could run much longer.
