Veterinarian Dr. Peter Lugten has always believed that a pet is a member of the family. He established Basic Pet Care Animal Hospital to be a place where pets can receive outstanding healthcare in a gentle, caring environment. We believe that quality care begins with an appointment of at least 30 minutes and requires a thorough examination. The next most important step is communication.
We spend sufficient time to discuss all the findings and recommendations. Dr. Lugten believes in the importance of follow-up phone calls to make sure that the treatment is successful. We place a strong emphasis on preventive medicine and also careful attention to dental health. We are proud of the modern, well equipped facility and invite you to tour it.
We have been accredited as meeting the standards set by the New York State Veterinary Medical Association.

Services
Regular examinations of your pet are important for the early diagnosis and prevention of disease.
Often these examinations are performed at the time of the pet's annual vaccination.
Commonly, we will discover problems in need of attention, such as ear and dental infections, arthritis, heart conditions and even tumors.
This is also an opportunity to discuss your pet's diet, weight, and behavior with the doctor.
Dogs are susceptible to round, hook and tape worms.
Whip worms are a major problem in older dogs.

A thorough annual exam is the key to keeping pets healthy.
Although dogs & cats can be surprisingly effective at communicating with their owners that they are not feeling well, they can have many low grade complaints that they cannot tell you about, until they progress to something more serious.
The annual examination at Basic Pet Care begins with the skin.
Many older dogs & cats have dry, greasy, itchy or scabby coats, and a prescribed regimen of baths, supplements, medication or a special diet can make a world of difference.

Basic pet care is equipped with its own laboratory facility.
We can perform in-house blood tests and have the results before the end of your appointment.
We also read fecal samples to check for parasites and have easy-to-use snap tests that quickly give us the results to your pet's Lyme Disease, Giardia, Heartworm Disease, Leukemia and FIV status.
As dogs and cats grow to middle age, we recommend yearly chemistry screening to ensure that internal illness aren't 'creeping up' without our noticing.

For the protection of all our guests- your pet, Surgery patients, and other boarders- we require that your pet be up to date with the basic inoculations: the yearly distemper, rabies, Lepto, Bordatella, and Influenza for dogs and Rabies and Distemper for cats.
Canine kennel cough (infectious trecheobronchitis) is transmitted by an airborne virus complex.
While current vaccines can protect against only three of thirteen known components of this complex.
This relatively recent disease is highly contagious and much more dangerous.

The dental proverb, "Be true to your teeth or they will be false to you, " is true not only for humans, but for pets as well.
Unfortunately, false teeth for dogs and cats aren't yet an option.
That's just one of the reasons proper dental care is important for your dog or cat.
Pets need strong, healthy teeth for chewing, grooming and enjoying daily activities like fetching a stick or picking up a ball.
And, even more important to note, pets need good teeth because dental disease, left untreated, can be life threatening.
