Kindred Spirits
We're driven to be lifelong learners. We strive to know more so we can keep being great at what we do. Dogs have a lot to teach us, as do others in our profession and fellow pet owners. We're interested in training tools, teaching methods, body language, toys, health problems, behavior causes, games, nutrition-you name it, if it's related to dogs, we're all in.

We've seen it all, and helped the owner and the dog both. From fear, to aggression, goofy to serious-issues major and tiny, we've discussed, debated, researched, tried things, watched progress, adjusted as needed, and helped dogs time and time again. It's kind of our thing. Students of Kindred Spirits get a team to help them, too. See, we don't have multiple trainers so we can rotate who is helping a class.

We have a team so we can all help a class, at the same time. We keep an eye on progress, can give thumbs up as students progress, make small adjustments, and answer questions. Students come to class to learn and train / work / play with their dog, and that's cool, because that's what we provide and we have a team to help provide it.
Services
We teach dogs what to do, step by step.
We use treats initially to teach the concept and make the training more effective, but we always have an alternative for situations where treats are not enough.
We respect dogs and their intelligence and we know they're capable of lots when things are explained clearly.
This is in contrast to purely positive trainers.
Purely positive training means never saying "no" or "that's not allowed", even if your puppy is chewing on you or the couch, the person is to wait until the dog stops the unwanted behavior, then reward the dog when he stops.
We have multiple trainers at each class so we get to know you and your dog and there is always someone available to answer questions.
We're a team and we're all here to help you and your dog succeed.
Liz Palika is the founder of Kindred Spirits Dog Training and has been teaching dogs and their owners in San Diego North County for more than 30 years.
Liz has been active in a variety of dog sports over the years, including agility, carting, conformation (dog shows), competitive obedience, flyball, Frisbee competitions, herding, lure coursing, schutzhund, search and rescue (including tracking and air scenting), scenting games, therapy dog work, and weight pulling.
We offer a variety of classes, they are a combination of instruction and practice, with real life distractions.
We talk about the exercises, demonstrate with student dogs, and answer questions.
Then everyone practices the exercise with guidance and multiple trainers around to help you and your dog progress.
If you have a puppy, 16 weeks of age or younger, then our puppy class is the way to start your dog out on the right paw.
Dogs older than 16 weeks should start in one of our basic classes.
Our basic class teaches you how to teach your dog the skills needed to succeed in our upper level classes, such as the Canine Good Citizen, Intermediate, or Tricks.
Want to get your puppy started on the right paw?
Our puppy training classes are a great way to prevent problems from starting, teach social skills, good manners, and a positive attitude about learning.
We want to teach you how to teach your puppy so he wants to listen and earn praise!
Each week, we cover different topics, practice around distractions, and work with you, wherever you and your puppy are at in your training.
We'll do a warm up to get the puppies attention, then talk and cover some topics, then bring the puppies out to practice.
Teach your dog how to be the dog you want!
Obedience training is the best way to prevent problems from starting and to clear up any problems you and your dog may be having.
Training is not just about teaching your dog to sit, down, and stay.
Our classes are designed for learning how to communicate with your dog, learning what your dog is communicating, and teaching your dog what you'd like from them.
When you and your dog reach an understanding, wonderful things can happen.
To teach your dog good canine manners, all that's needed is some time, knowledge, and a commitment.
